Jesus challenges us to forgive others. It is a clear command and unambiguous. That is our part to do. When we do, GOD forgives us. He is also clear that if we don't forgive others, GOD won't forgive us for missing GOD's goal for our life.

The requirements to forgive others to be forgiven is also in the Our Father prayer. It is clearly demonstrated.
