Atlanta Braves History: Hank Aaron hits number 500 (July 14, 1968)

Hank Aaron is amazing. He is just moving along, hitting home runs and helping the Braves win.

Hank hits home run number 500 off Mike McCormick becoming the eighth major leaguer to reach this milestone on July 14,1968. 'Hammerin' Hank's three-run homer over the left center field fence proves to be the difference as the Braves beat the Giants at Atlanta Stadium, 4-2.

"No more tit-for-tat stuff." ~~Jesus

Our culture tends to be one of retaliation. Someone hurts us, we envision a way to get them back. There is no thought of taking one for Jesus.

Jesus challenges to live in GOD's World (Kingdom). In His world, we are to represent Him. He is love. Love acts differently. Love doesn't retaliate. Love doesn't plot on how to get even. Love looks for an opportunity to do good no matter what the other person has done. Love rules!!

What do I learn from the rude?

The way of the world is to want to hang out with the cool people. They can help us for sure. We all understand that.

Paul hung with them AND he also hung with the uncool. He found value and fulfillment from those who were rude to him. He learned a lot from those who were so smart. In GOD's world that makes sense.
Everyone I meet—it matters little whether they're mannered or rude, smart or simple—deepens my sense of interdependence and obligation. And that's why I can't wait to get to you in Rome, preaching this wonderful good news of God. Romans 1:13-15

Who is the most awesome?

You give me power and might. O God, you are so amazing, so awesome. You are terribly beautiful. It just streams forth from your presence. You are such a strong and powerful God.

And you give me your power. You don't keep it  to yourself. You could, but you don't. How amazing is that. You are with us. Nothing is impossible for you.

May I praise you at every turn.
You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary;
the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people.
Praise be to God! Psalm 68:35

How do I want to be treated?

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]"The Golden Rule" mosaic "The Golden Rule" mosaic (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

How do I want to be treated? With respect. With understanding. I like to be given the benefit of the doubt.

How do you want to be treated?

Jesus said "Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize faults-unless, of course, you want the same treatment."

I don't want to be treated that way. I should never be critical of others. Hard to do but through the power of His Spirit I can.

"With all my might I shout up to God, His answers thunder from the holy mountain." ~~King David

Public EnemyMy enemy enjoys mocking me. He gets so much pleasure from it. It is fun and funny to him. So, what should I think about that?

When  I look to God, He always answers. No exceptions. No variations. Consistent results with God.

So, who will I look at? My enemy or God?

May I always choose God.
God! Look! Enemies past counting! Enemies sprouting like mushrooms, Mobs of them all around me, roaring their mockery: "Hah! No help for him from God!"

But you, God, shield me on all sides; You ground my feet, you lift my head high; With all my might I shout up to God, His answers thunder from the holy mountain. Psalm 3:1-4

Can I hold my head high?

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="200"]Faith Happens Faith Happens (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

There is a certain kind of honor that is worth having. False pride, in doing it "my way" is useless. Getting though difficult times because of our faith allows us to look in the mirror, face others, and be confident that "God's way" has been done.

That is the way to do it. That is the real deal. Doing it "His way" allows us to hold our heads high. Lesson learned.

Paul indicates things had gotten bad. Life isn't always "what we want it to be". There are trials. When the worst is over, I want to be able "to be pleased to report".
Now that the worst is over, we're pleased we can report that we've come out of this with conscience and faith intact, and can face the world—and even more importantly, face you with our heads held high. 2 Corinthians 1:12

"I write this, dear children, to guide you out of missing God's goal for your life." ~~Apostle John

John has a focus for his message to us. It is one we ought to all make the most of. God has a goal for our life. Without Jesus, we miss it. We shouldn't. We don't have to.

God is in a good mood. We have help in understanding how  to meet God's goal. We have help in living a life of power, in God's Spirit to hit the mark.

And John is clear about the goal. It is to love one another. It is to love everyone we come in contact with. God's goal is love.
"I write this, dear children, to guide you out of missing God's goal for your life (sin)." ~~Apostle John (1 John 2:1 The Message)

Atlanta Brave History: National League and Dale Murphy beat the Junior Circuit (July 10, 1984)

Now this will expose my bias but I am clear on that. You will see a lot of references to the All-Star game and the Junior Circuit. Who is the Junior Circuit? The American League of course. Who else would it be?

On July 10, 1984, National League beats the Junior Circuit at Candlestick Park, 3-1. Home runs hit by Expos' catcher Gary Carter, the game's MVP, and Braves' outfielder Dale Murphy prove to be the difference in the 55th Midsummer Classic. Another reason I love Dale Murphy.

Candlestick Park was great. The new field for the Giants is very nice but Candlestick had a "nice feel" to it.

Can I respond with blazing fast speed?

My Father is helping me. He is bringing out the best in me. He is helping me to have a God-formed maturity. This is unlike our culture that is always dragging me down to its level of amazing immaturity. It is interesting how our culture assaults us everyday. So very subtle that it is hard to even recognize it. What I need to recognize is what He wants from me and to respond to it with blazing fast speed.
So ... I take my everyday and completely ordinary life --- my sleeping, eating, going-to-to work and just walking around life -- and I place it at our Father's alter as an offering. I embrace our Father's desire for me. I see my place in Him. I see His love for me. I fix my attention on God. He changes me from the inside out.

What is God's new plan for us?

Our Father had a new plan for us. It wasn't based on the old plan where sacrificing could cover up for us missing the goal that God has for us. Nope. No more "things to do" to be in right standing. Now that is good news.

Jesus took care of all of that. Nothing left we can do to get right with God. Now Jesus has taken His seat of honor next to our Father. It is the seat of absolute perfection right alongside God. Not even angels have that kind of honor. Angels have a special place with God. Jesus is way above that. Jesus is the faithful Son. God celebrates what Jesus did for us.

Atlanta Braves History: Joe Morgan goes 6-6 against the Braves (July 9, 1965)

Joe Morgan sets an Astro record by going 6- for-6 at Milwaukee's County Stadium on July 8, 1965 . The rookie second baseman's stellar performance doesn't stop the Milwaukee Braves from beating Houston, 9-8 that day.

Of course the Braves are now in Atlanta and we have the Milwaukee Brewers. Hard to keep up with it all some days. And the Astro's no longer play at the Astro Dome. I saw lots of great games there when I lived in Houston.

Joe Morgan was a great though. Love to see him when he is announcing games.

Atlanta Braves History: Dave Bancroft argues with his manager (May 20, 1920)

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="250"]English: 1921 Exhibits Baseball Card of Dave B... English: 1921 Exhibits Baseball Card of Dave Bancroft of the New York Giants (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

When Dave Bancroft was at Philadelphia‚ on May 22, 1920, the Cubs outslug the Phils‚ 15-8. Renie Martin pitches the entire game for the Cubs‚ with both teams collecting 16 hits. Phils manager Gavvy Cravath lifts shortstop Dave Bancroft because of poor playing and the ensuing argument between the two almost comes to blows. Cy Williams has three hits‚ including a double a triple‚ and 4 runs scored.

He would come to the Braves in 1924. We could only hope he wouldn't repeat this type of play.

"Up, God! My God, help me! Slap their faces, First this cheek, then the other, Your fist hard in their teeth!" ~~King David

King David had real enemies and he was a warrior for GOD. He knew GOD was the only one who could win the battle. He had a heart for GOD. He called on GOD to strike down his enemies.

Jesus challenges us to know that we have an enemy. The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy us. Jesus has defeated him and we can walk in His victory. We have to know we have an enemy. We have to walk in the "new life" of Jesus and His victory. Our focus has to be on GOD's world (Kingdom) and not our enemy, the devil in this world.

God is great and He is GOD. He is in complete control.
"Up, God! My God, help me! Slap their faces, First this cheek, then the other, Your fist hard in their teeth!" ~~King David (Psalm 3:7 The Message)

Did I forget to do good?

I really meant to but I just got overwhelmed with everything else on my to do list and all the crisis that came my way. Too many meetings and too many emails. It would have taken a lot (sacrifice) to have made time. I didn't. Is that what God wants from me?

Nope, here is what pleases God.
And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:15-17

"But it wasn't by any fancy footwork on our part" ~~Apostle Paul

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]Saint Paul with a Scroll and a Sword. Saint Paul with a Scroll and a Sword. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

Paul depended on Jesus and the Holy Spirit to speak about the Good News. He depended on Jesus completely. While he could be eloquent, he learned that it wasn't of any use. He must have the power of GOD. That is all that matters. Speaking with the power of the resurrected Jesus.

Can I not rely on myself and depend on Jesus?
"But it wasn't by any fancy footwork on our part" ~~Apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 1:12 The Message)

"What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn't treat him like God...." ~~Apostle Paul

We all know GOD exists. Sure, there are some atheist but they are really kidding themselves. So lets not think about that. We know there is a GOD. Here is the big question. Do we treat Him like GOD? Think about it. GOD is GOD. GOD is great. GOD is good. We "know it". Do we believe Him?

If we don't treat him like GOD, GOD says, in effect, "If that's what you want, that's what you get." This is a case of be careful what you ask for.
"What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn't treat him like God...." ~~Apostle Paul (Romans 1:18 The Message)

Atlanta Braves History: Andy Leonard from 1876 - 1878

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="300"]English: Andy Leonard, Boston Red Stockings, 1... Andy Leonard, Boston Red Stockings, 1874 left field (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

Andrew (Andy) Jackson Leonard was born on Monday, June 1, 1846, in County Cavan, Ireland. Leonard was 29 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 22, 1876, with the Boston Red Caps and played 3 seasons with them. He died on August 21, 1903 in Boston.

On July 7, 1871, the Olympics of Washington‚ at home‚ score 18 runs in the 6th and defeat Ft. Wayne‚ 32-12. Four players go to bat three times in the big inning-John Glenn‚ Andy LeonardAsa Brainard and George Hall. Leonard scores 3 times.

In Boston on June 14, 1873‚ 2‚000 spectators watch the Reds suffer a shutout for the first time in their history. Dick McBride of the Athletics holds the champions to only 2 hits. An unusual play occurs near the end of the game when Tim Murnane‚ who later as "Murnane" becomes a famous sports writer‚ avoids a tag by Andy by jumping over him to reach 2B. That may not have been too tough since I think he was only 5' 7" tall.

In 1877, At Boston's South End Fair‚ he wins a gold watch valued at $300 for being voted the league's "most popular player." I'm not sure what the significance of receiving this on November 30.

Now with the  Cincinnati Reds on July 3, 1880, Andy makes 2 two-run errors to lose a game to Providence‚ 6-4. This will lead to Andy's release‚ ending a career that dates back to the original Red Stockings of 1869.

Here's what his pro career looked like.

Atlanta Braves History: Rico Carty was first write-in All-Star (July 7, 1970)

Rico Carty, the National League's leading hitter, becomes the first player voted to play in the All-Star Game as a write-in candidate on July 7, 1970. The Braves outfielder name was left off the ballot that was drawn up by managers and general managers before the start of spring training.

Atlanta Braves History: Dale Murphy is picked by the Braves in the 1st round (June 5, 1974)

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="240"]Dale Murphy - Atlanta - 1983 Road Dale Murphy - Atlanta - 1983 Road (Photo credit: BaseballBacks)[/caption]

The June 5. 1974 draft produces just 725 picks‚ the fewest in history‚ and only 300 of these are from the college ranks‚ with the low number blamed on the introduction of aluminum bats this past season.

In the 1st round, with the 5th pick‚ the Braves select Dale Murphy. It is hard to know if they had a clue about the talent they just brought on board. Probably not. What a great pick it ended up being though.

The Padres‚ with their 3rd number-one free-agent pick in 5 years‚ select Brown University SS Bill Almon‚ the TSN College Player of the Year. They had selected him 3 years earlier out of high school‚ but he attended college instead. The Rangers take P Tommy Boggs with the 2nd pick and the Phils follow with prep OF Lonnie Smith. The Angels‚ picking 10th take the ill-fated Mike Miley‚ who quarterbacked LSU to a win in the Orange Bowl. the Tigers take Lance Parrish with the 16th pick‚ the Royals pick prep football star Willie Wilson with the 18th‚ and the Red Sox‚ picking 20th‚ take SS Eddie Ford‚ son of Whitey Ford. Picking next‚ the Dodgers get Rick Sutcliffe.

The Orioles‚ with the 24th pick in round 1 pick Rich Dauer‚ the top player for USC's championship team; 4 of their other picks will end up in the NFL (QB's Andy Johnson‚ Steve Bartkowski‚ and John Sciarra‚ and Anthony Davis). The Cards use a pick on the NFL Giants Brad Van Pelt‚ the 5th time he's been selected. The Twins pick up prep C Butch Wynegar‚ who will make the AL All-star team at age 20.

And so, the Braves added to their roster a future star in 1974. Doesn't always work out that way.

"A good life is a fruit-bearing tree; a violent life destroys souls." ~~King Solomon

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]An apricot and its cross section An apricot and its cross section (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

When we live the life God has intended for us, it is like a tree that gives us delicious fruit. There is nothing like fresh fruit. We all love it. I was at the market yesterday and just had to get some figs and apricots.

That is in contrast to a life of violence. I think this is not just physical. Anything opposite of doing what GOD wants us too is violence against GOD and it destroys our very souls.

Thank GOD for the Holy Spirit of GOD that gives us the power to live the resurrected life of Jesus. Now that is Good News.

Where is the sting of death?

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]Česky: Kříže - symbol utrpení Ježíše Krista a ... Česky: Kříže - symbol utrpení Ježíše Krista a jeho ukřižování (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

Death has no power. It has been swallowed up whole by the triumphant resurrection of our Master Jesus. This is reality. Does death have the last word on things? Not hardly. No way. Jesus has seen to that. It is over.

Who should be afraid of death knowing what we know? No one. Certainly not me.

It was not following God's plan that gave death it's leverage. It doesn't have that hold now. Jesus has given me, in one single victorious stroke of life, a life free from guilt. A life free from sin. A life free from death. The old life of trying to live up to all the rules is gone. How destructive was that? Way too much guilt for sure. But it is gone in His redeeming power of His death and the victory of His ressurection.

May I experience that gift every day. May I experience it today for sure!!!

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57

At Dodger Stadium on July 5, 2007, Chipper Jones's two solo home runs is the difference in the Braves' 8-6 victory over Los Angeles. With his pair of round-trippers, the team's third baseman surpasses Dale Murphy for the Atlanta team record of 372 homers.

Chipper will retire this year. I will miss him.

Atlanta Braves History: Game delay due to dog on the field (July 5, 1953)

In their final season in Boston, on July 5, 1953, the Braves play in front of the largest home crowd of the season when 13,405 fans watch Brooklyn beat their team for the 12th consecutive time, a 5-3 complete-game victory by Carl Erskine. The most memorable moment of the contes

Sometimes I have to be challenged. Jesus does it all the time. This quote from Oswald Chambers hit me right between the eyes. I am responsible to GOD for other people coming to His Son Jesus. There is no plan B. GOD is counting on me.

Ezra Sutton started with the Braves (then known as the Boston Red Caps) in 1877. He came to the Braves from Philadelphia. Manager Harry Wright placed the infielder in the lineup as a shortstop. That was a gutsy move since his brother George was currently playing the position. He moved George to second base. It was the only year George would not play shortstop.

It paid off for Harry. Sutton drove in 39 runs that year. That was good enough for third in the league that year. The Braves ended up winning the pennant 7 games ahead.

Jesus challenges us to understand that it is not what we eat that is the problem. The problem is our heart. The problem is what we think, do and say. That is the real pollution in our life. Jesus is clear that it's what comes out of a person that pollutes: obscenities, lusts, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, depravity, deceptive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness—all these are vomit from the heart in GOD's world (Kingdom).

We need to know this about our self so that we can take advantage of Jesus redeeming us from the price we have to pay for what is in our heart. Jesus gives a new heart. Now that is good news.
"Listen now, all of you— take this to heart. It's not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it's what you vomit—that's the real pollution." ~~Jesus (Mark 7:15 The Message)

Atlanta Braves History: July 4, 1919 (second game)

The Boston Braves (now known as the Atlanta Braves) won the second game of the Double Header on July 4, 1919 at Ebbets Field after having lost the first game. At this point in the season we were in 7th place, 15 1/2 games behind.

My dad (Everett Wiley Wilson) was born this day. He probably would have expected them to split this. He saw or listened to a lot of games over the years. Johnny Rawlings, the second baseman, went 4 for 5 at bats in this game with a home run, a double, and a stolen base. Rabbit Maranville, our shortstop,  went 2 for 3 with a home run and sacrifice hit. Dick Rudolf was the winning pitcher with a complete game. Both runs were earned.

And so, my dad was born. He would come to love the Braves.

"The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children." ~William Havard

Why are we here? What is our purpose in life? We are to love GOD and love everyone we come in contact with every day.

And, we have a responsibility to pass on the freedom we have in Jesus to our children.
"The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children." ~William Havard

"In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved." ~~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Atlanta Braves History: July 4, 1919

My dad was born on this day. He loved the Atlanta Braves. They were the Boston Braves at this point. 1919 was not a great year for the Braves and July 4th would be fairly typical of the season. The played a double header on this day. They split the pair with the Brooklyn Dodgers. And so, my dad (Everett Wiley Wilson) was born and the Braves split a pair.

"The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life." ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to look beyond a cool bottle of water. This world and all it offers doesn't satisfy. Jesus brings to us satisfaction and a life that never ends.

Jesus challenges to look around us, the bread we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear and see them for what they are. Temporary items of this world that never satisfy us. We consume and always want more. It is never enough. In GOD's world (Kingdom) we are always satisfied.
"The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life." ~~Jesus (John 4:14 The Message)

What is the most important thing?

What kind of legacy do I want to leave my children? What is the most important thing I can do? What will make it easy for them in life?

Great questions. Here is God's answer. Be God-loyal. Pretty straightforward. The things I think may be important pale in light of being loyal to Him. That is what will help my children.
God-loyal people, living honest lives, make it much easier for their children. Proverbs 20:7

"Yes, we did produce a near perfect Republic. But will they keep it? Or will they in the enjoyment of plenty lose the memory of Freedom? Material abundance without character is the surest way to destruction." ~Thomas Jefferson

Atlanta Braves History: Tony Cloniger hits 2 grand slams (July 3, 1966)

In a 17-3 rout of the Giants on July 3, 1945, Tony Cloninger hits two grand slams in the same game and collects nine RBI's in the Candlestick Park contest. The Braves' pitcher is the first National league player to hit two home runs with the bases full in the same game.

Atlanta Braves History: Braves lose 24-2 to the Cubs (July 3, 1945)

At Braves Field in Boston on July 3, 1945‚ the Cubs tally the most runs in their post-1900 history when they blast the Braves, 24-2. Phil Cavarretta‚ Don Johnson‚ and Stan Hack each score five times tying a major league mark.

Atlanta Braves History: Record for most home runs in an inning (July 3, 1967)

In Atlanta-Fulton Stadium‚ Billy Williams‚ Ron Santo‚ and Randy Hundley all homer for the Cubs in the first‚ and Rico Carty and Felipe Alou also go deep for the Braves in the same inning. The five round-trippers tie a major league record for home runs hit by two teams in the same inning, but it is the first time its been done in the opening frame.

Now I appreciate records for the Braves but not when it also involves the other team. :)

How did GOD think of that?

A guest blog from my good friend Debra McKnight.
I can see God’s mind-blowing handy work all around me. Here are just a few:

The Universe. It goes on forever. How does it do that?
Diversity of Life. From plants to animals. If you look at the diversity of just something like little unimportant beetles- there are over 500,000 different kinds of them. Amazing.
Gravity. Magnetism. Electricity. How did He come up with those?
Rain. Water drops on our heads from the clouds, nourishes the world and then evaporates back into the atmosphere again. God is the original Recycler.
Procreation. A woman. A man. A new life grows INSIDE the woman. That’s just bizarre when you think about it.
Love. Forgiveness. Resurrection. Salvation. Wow!

Our God is indeed God. And He is Good. And He is GREAT!

And while you're here, let me ask YOU. What do you see that makes you wonder "How did He think of that?"

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300"]English: Farmer Farmer (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption]

Jesus challenges us to understand GOD's word. GOD is the farmer. It is GOD who plants the seed, His word.

This has nothing to do with us. It is all GOD's doing. We like think we are the center of things. Even the disciples of Jesus didn't get what Jesus was saying and they were with Him all day long for 3 years. It all starts with GOD and His word. That is the most important thing to understand. It is all about GOD and what He says / wants.

Atlanta Braves History: Joe Adcock sets new record for total bases (1954)

In the afternoon game on May 30, 1894‚ Boston 2B Bobby (Link) Lowe hits HRs in 4 consecutive at bats‚ including 2 in the 3rd inning‚ to lead his team to a 20-11 first-game conquest of Cincinnati and a sweep of the doubleheader. The homers came off Iceberg Chamberlain‚ and all were lofted over the 250-foot LF wall of Boston's Congress Street Grounds‚ the Beaneater's temporary home. Lowe also adds a single to total 17 bases for the game‚ a record tied but not beaten until Joe Adcock in 1954. After Lowe's 4th homer‚ the crowd showers him with $160 in coins. There are 9 homers hit in the opener with Bug Holliday hitting 2. In the two games‚ Lowe's teammate Herman Long sets a ML record by scoring 9 runs (5 runs in game 1)‚ which has since been tied only once. Lowe‚ who used the time between games of the twinbill to help himself to the shore dinner at the North Boston Railroad Station‚ will try the same meal tomorrow‚ but will go hitless.

Can I see everything in its time?

"You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' I'm challenging that. I'm telling you to love your enemies." ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to go beyond what the rules say. He knows we focus on "what the rule says" and then find loopholes. Religion is about loopholes. GOD is about real love.

Our mission, according to Jesus, is an extraordinary kind of love. Our love is to be like GOD's love. A love that almost can't be understood. A love for even our enemies. His Spirit makes it happen for us.

Do we have a passion for that kind of love? Will we live that out today?
"You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' and its unwritten companion, 'Hate your enemy.' I'm challenging that. I'm telling you to love your enemies." ~~Jesus (Matthew 5:44 The Message)

Charity without love

Without love, all my charity is nothing. Love is the start and end of it all. It doesn't matter what I say or think or do. I am completely bankrupt without love. Sacrifice is nothing without the starting point of love. Jesus made this so very clear. Paul got it. I must lean in, hear Him and love. Giving from love changes everything. Giving and sacrifice without love is useless. There is a difference.
May I love and be profitable!!

And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:3

What will I say?

Oh man, this hits home with me. I think a lot. I am a thinker. So, I think about what I am going to say. I rehearse things in my mind. Maybe this goes back to my acting and speaking training. So yes ... I worry about how or what I am going to say.

I need to trust that my heavenly Father will give me what I need to say. His Spirit speaks in me. So if it is His Spirit speaking in my, why would I worry?
Do not worry about how or what you are to say ; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say. For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. Matthew 10:19-20

Have you ever played "Mother May I?"

Maybe I am getting too old. I remember playing this game. It taught me a lot. There is a game kids play called “Mother, May I.” The rules are simple. A group of kids stand facing one kid who is the “Mother.” The object of the game is to reach “Mother” by taking a certain number of steps, hops, jumps, etc. The first kid to reach “Mother” wins. One player plays the "mother", "father" or "captain". The other players are the "children" or "crewmembers".

To begin the game, the mother or father stands at one end of a room and turns around facing away, while all the children line up at the other end. The children take turns asking "Mother/Father, may I ____?" and makes a movement suggestion. For example, one might ask, "Mother/Father, may I take five steps forward?" The mother/father either replies "Yes, you may" or "No, you may not do that, but you may _____ instead" and inserts his/her own suggestion. Now we used to suggest things like like "hop like a frog and whistle Dixie while taking 5 jumps backward". And guess what, they had to. No debate.

The players usually move closer to the mother/father but are sometimes led farther away. Even if the mother/father makes an unfavorable suggestion, the child must still perform it. The first of the children to reach the location of the mother/father wins the game. That child then becomes the mother/father himself, the original mother/father becomes a child, and a new round begins.

The “catch” in the game is to remember to ask the question: “Mother, May I?” If you forget, you go all the way back to the beginning. Really, I get penalized for not being polite and not following the rules? Yes, that is the way it works.

Except, I think we may have lost our way in some ways.

GOD hasn't forgotten though. May I be humble, not demand and always ask. He is faithful.

"If someone drags you into court and sues for the shirt off your back, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it." ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to have a GOD World (Kingdom) approach to retaliation. Our normal approach to being sued is to defend ourselves or counter sue. Jesus challenges us to give our enemies what they want and then overwhelm them with love and generosity by giving them something precious they didn't ask for. GOD's way is love. GOD's way is generosity. Our heavenly Father doesn't want us to retaliate. Being generous gains attention for GOD where retaliation is expected.

Jesus sets a standard for us that requires us to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the power of love.

"It's what comes out of a person that pollutes ... all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution." ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to be concerned about the right things. It is all about the heart. Is what is coming out of us from a "pure of heart"? Or are spewing forth "vomit from the heart"?

We worry about how we look. We struggle to create a perception of a good life when at our core we have a problem. GOD sees the heart. GOD knows our heart. We can't fool Him.

We must change our mind about what is important. We must focus on getting right with GOD.
"It's what comes out of a person that pollutes: obscenities, lusts, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, depravity, deceptive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness—all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution." ~~Jesus (Mark 7:21-23 The Message)

"Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever." ~~Jesus

Eternity is a long time. Think a billion years. Not enough. A trillion years. Not enough. It is hard enough to think of 100. Jesus wants us to wrap our minds around the enormity of what GOD can and will do. GOD is GOD.

Jesus offers the Holy Spirit and life for all eternity. It is an unconditional offer. It is ours for believing in Him and GOD.

Jesus challenges us to drink His water and be satisfied. It is enough. We don't need anything else.
"Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever." ~~Jesus (John 4:14 The Message)

Ga., SC mountains mark 40 year 'Deliverance' anniversary

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since this movie exploded on the scene. My sister Janice and I rafted down the Chatooga River one weekend. That was my first experience rafting and it was a blast. I am thinking it was after the movie came out but I need to see if my sister remembers better than I do.
This weekend, communities along the Chattooga are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie's release with the first-ever Chattooga River Festival, even though some locals are unhappy with the idea of reminding the world of the area's connection to the movie.

"It's one of those cases where some good comes out of most everything," said Stan Darnell, chairman of the Rabun County, Ga., board of commissioners. "Certainly a lot of good came out of that, as far as opening up film industry, the kayaking, the camping."

Atlanta Braves History: Braves 4, Red Sox 1 - June 22, 2012

Great news for the Atlanta Braves last night. Jurrgens returned and did well. And, it was against Boston. Of course, Braves fans know that the Atlanta Braves started their franchise in Boston before there was a Red Sox team. While I am not a big fan of inter-league play, I love it when we play in Boston.
So Jair Jurrjens returned, and it was the Good Jurrjens, keeping the ball in the park, not walking people, but only getting a handful of strikeouts so you’re not too certain about his long-term outlook.

The game was scoreless through three when Matt Diaz grounded out to score Freddie Freeman, and Andrelton Simmons doubled home Jason Heyward (who was 3-4 with two doubles on the day) to make it 2-0. Simmons added an insurance run with a sac fly to score Heyward in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Jurrjens was cruising. He allowed a first inning single and a third inning walk, and that was it until the eighth. He allowed a leadoff double in that inning, and another double with two out to make it 3-1; Chad Durbin came in to get the last out. Freeman singled in Michael Bourn in the ninth to make it 4-1, and Craig Kimbrel had, yes, a 1-2-3 ninth for the easy save.

"My mother and brothers are the ones who hear and do God's Word. Obedience is thicker than blood." ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to see the reality of GOD's World (Kingdom). Who is our family? Who are our mother's, brothers and sisters? What is family all about?

What is that reality? Obedience is the only thing that matters. Who is obeying GOD? They are our family. We need to be loyal to them. We need to love them.

Jesus throws conventional wisdom on its ear. Blood is not the thicker than water.

It is all about who is doing what GOD wants to have done today. Find them. Connect with them.

"My mother and brothers are the ones who hear and do GOD's Word. Obedience is thicker than blood." ~~Jesus (Luke 8:21 The Message)

"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book." ~~Groucho Marx

How tough is this? Arguments and wisdom

OK, I don't mean it to happen. I know you don't either. Who really likes to argue. OK, some people do but I think it is rare. So what is the root cause? Pride. Plan and simple.

What is the solution to being wise! Be willing to take advice.

"If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God's part." ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to forgive others. It is a clear command and unambiguous. That is our part to do. When we do, GOD forgives us. He is also clear that if we don't forgive others, GOD won't forgive us for missing GOD's goal for our life.

Really? Yes, really. He said it. I think He meant it.

May I forgive. May I root resentment out of my heart and life.

"If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from GOD's part." ~~Jesus (Matthew 6:14 The Message)

Should we wear crash helmets to church? Are you ready to be lashed to your pew?

Annie Dillard has one of the best quotes on church. She is an unbeliever as best I can tell. She knows, however, that if you believe in GOD you better be prepared for who GOD is. He is explosive in His ability and desire to do what we all think can't be done. So why don't churches, for the most part, act that way?

Do you have your crash helmet on? Are you ready to be lashed to your pew?
Why do people in church seem like cheerful, brainless tourists on a packaged tour of the Absolute? … Does anyone have the foggiest idea what sort of power we blithely invoke? Or, as I suspect, does no one believe a word of it? The churches are children playing on the floor with their chemistry sets, mixing up a batch of TNT to kill a Sunday morning. It is madness to wear ladies’ straw hats and velvet hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers should issue life preservers and signal flares; they should lash us to our pews. For the sleeping GOD may wake someday and take offense, or the waking GOD may draw us to where we can never return.

Mississippi civil rights workers murders - June 21, 1964

I was 10 in 1964. Racism was the "way it was" in the South. I was in Atlanta. I have all kinds of horrible memories of what it was like then. If I had been older, this might have been me in this story. Thank God our world has changed. While I love my dad, this way of life is one thing we always disagreed on.
The Mississippi civil rights workers murders involved the lynching of three anti-racism and social justice activists near Philadelphia in Neshoba County, Mississippi on June 21, 1964, during the American Civil Rights Movement.

The murders of James Chaney, a 21-year-old black man from nearby Meridian, Mississippi; Andrew Goodman, a 20-year-old white Jewish anthropology student from New York; and Michael Schwerner, a 24-year-old white Jewish CORE organizer and former social worker also from New York, demonstrated the dangers faced by civil rights workers in the South, especially during what became known as "Freedom Summer", dedicated to voter education and registration. Blacks in Mississippi, as throughout the former Confederacy, lived under racial segregation and Jim Crow laws, and had been essentially disfranchised in Mississippi since the passage of the state constitution of 1890.

"You scratch out God's Word and scrawl a whim in its place. You do a lot of things like this." ~~Jesus

Jesus is talking to religious people. That would be us. He challenges us to really understand what God is saying and to quit making up things that only benefit what we want. Jesus isn't looking for selfish people. He doesn't want us to be religious and quote scripture for our own benefit. He knows we do this way too much.

He wants us to search out God's word and act on what He is asking us to do.

"You scratch out God's Word and scrawl a whim in its place. You do a lot of things like this." ~~Jesus (Mark 7:13 The Message)

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

If we don't believe what we read in the Bible, how will we believe when Jesus actually talks to us?

This is a very relevant question for us, "the religious". Jesus is challenging us. Do we hear Him? Are we sure? How are we sure we are sure?

What did He say?

Jesus is challenging us. May I hear Him now.

"But don't think I'm going to accuse you before my Father." ~~Jesus

Jesus is clear about His role. He is the one who saves us from missing God's goal for our life. He is the one gives us this great gift of life that will never end.

Jesus is also clear that others may accuse us. He was talking to the religious leaders of His day. The believed what Moses said, but they didn't believe Jesus. Do we believe what Joel Osteen says but not Jesus? Do we believe Rick Warren but not Jesus?

The essence is that we must believe Jesus. May I do that always.

"But don't think I'm going to accuse you before my Father." ~~Jesus (John 5: 45 The Message)

"Don't load yourselves up with equipment." ~~Jesus

Jesus has powerful but simple things He wants us to do. We don't need a lot of equipment to complete His mission today. He will supply us everything we need. He does His work through us. We are the equipment.

This is hard to keep in mind. In our world, we think the more we have, the better the buildings, the better off we are. In God's World (Kingdom), He doesn't need our equipment. He is God. He can do anything and takes pleasure in turning water in wine. I think it may even amuse Him to confound us. Just saying!!

"Don't load yourselves up with equipment." ~~Jesus (Luke 9 The Message)

God bless the conservative father

Many of us were fortunate to be raised by a responsible, moral, conservative father --  imperfect though he may have been.  He scoffed when his children cried, "that's not fair."  He taught us work before play, the value of money, self-respect, right and wrong, and the limits of government and the power of personal responsibility -- if not in words, by his example.   I am grateful for many blessings, but a conservative father (Everett Wiley Wilson) is chief among them.

I use the word conservative with a small "c". While he voted Republican most his life, politically he was probably a Libertarian. He listened to Neal Bortz everyday after he retired. His conservative world view did spill over into his politics. My own father never organized anyone.  He expected people to organize their own lives, and their own communities, free from the obstacle of tyrannical government preferably.   He never presumed to rule over another, nor did he expect anyone to tell him how to live his life.   He never lectured from stadiums grandiosely flanked by Greek columns, but his words resonated.  He never padded a resume, nor embellished, let alone created, his own history.  And yet, his history speaks volumes.

My father grew up with strong, Christian, honorable men who served and defended this great nation, knew hard work (he was 10 when the Great Depression started in 1929), God-given liberty, and right and wrong.  My father grew up when Sunday was reserved for family and church; before helmets were required to walk to the mailbox; and before putting the playground bully in his place with a discreet right hook was criminal.   He knew how to change the oil in his own car, and how to farm and garden before leftists commandeered produce for social change.  He watched great men land on the moon, and even greater men returning from war.  He understood why soldiers fought those wars, and he was grateful and humbled.  He fought in World War II and didn't like to talk about it. He grew up before MTV was around to bash Christians, and glamorize teen pregnancy, victimhood, bad behavior, and hedonistic drunkards from the Jersey Shore.   To my knowledge, my father never dealt drugs, ate dog, nor perfectly recited the Islamic call to prayer.

So, God bless the conservative father. May we have more of them.

"Leave things better than you found them." ~Everett Wiley Wilson (my father)

I can hear my dad (Everett Wiley Wilson) now. I'm playing baseball. Normally I am catching but today I am playing left field (or "left out" as my dad would call it). There is always plenty of time on your hands in left field. Not much action.

My dad is the coach. He wanders down the line and asks me to pick up rocks in between pitches and throw them off the field. "Why" I say in my best indignant tone of voice. If I had thought about it I would have known what his answer would be. It wasn't the first time he said it. It wouldn't be his last.

"Leave things better than you found them", he says. And so ... I picked up rocks and threw them off the field. I left things better than I found them. I was no worse for the wear.

That is the way my dad lived his life. It was important to him. It was almost a holy obligation. We weren't here to take from others. We are here to serve. We must leave things better than we found them. This meant in the simple things in life. Playing baseball. Walking through a room. Work. It doesn't matter.

My dad taught me lots of great things like that. Simple but very important.

I miss him but he is with me in these important lessons I learned from him. As a father myself, I hope I am passing this along as well.

"Leave things better than you found them." ~Everett Wiley Wilson

"People who don't know God and the way he works worry too much." ~~Jesus

Why do we worry? What produces that anxiety in our gut?

Because we don't know what a good mood God, our Father, is in. He loves us. He has every good thing in store for us. When we get that at our core, we relax. We are at peace. We don't worry at all.

May I remember, today, how God works. May I relax. May I be at peace.
"People who don't know God and the way he works worry too much." ~~Jesus (Matthew 6 The Message)

A sad thing ...

"The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped." ~~King Solomon

I am thinking how true this is. The more we bless others the more we are blessed. And it is an abundant blessing. More than we could ever imagine. Our mission is to help others. Our Father has sent us into His World (Kingdom) to love everyone we come in contact with every day. That is our job. When we do it in His name, we are helped as well.

May I bless others today. May I be of help.
"The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped." ~~King Solomon (Proverbs 11:25)

"But you weasel out of that by saying ...." ~~Jesus

Jesus is direct with us about twisting God's words and using them to our advantage. Jesus knows what His Father said and meant. We do too. We can't weasel out by trying to change the intent. Jesus challenges us to not be religious. It is all about knowing God, listening to God and doing what our loving Father wants us to. Obedience is preferred over sacrifice.

May I believe what God has said and act on it.
Moses said, 'Respect your father and mother,' and, 'Anyone denouncing father or mother should be killed.' But you weasel out of that by saying that it's perfectly acceptable to say to father or mother, 'Gift! What I owed you I've given as a gift to God,' thus relieving yourselves of obligation to father or mother. (Mark 7:10 The Message)

"Go home. Your son lives." ~~Jesus

You come to Jesus. You beg him to personally come and heal your son who is dying. Jesus puts you off. Won't go see him and heal him. Jesus makes a blunt statement that all you are interested in is miracles. Jesus challenges you. Will you be put off? Will you slink away? Do you have faith?

This man did not slink away. He had faith and kept at Jesus. He begged. He pleaded. He knew Jesus could heal his son. So, Jesus says to him:
"Go home. Your son lives." ~~Jesus (John 4:51 The Message)

He went home. His son was healed. Just as he believed and just as Jesus said.

Jesus challenges us. Do we really believe?

My father's flag

My father (Everett Wiley Wilson) served in WWII. This is the flag that was draped on his coffin. God bless men and women like my dad.

We miss you.
